Taichi: The Story of a Chinese Master in America by Marc Meyer
A T’ai Chi Master embarks on a new life by moving to New York City in the mid 1960’s but is surprised by the level of social unrest and violence he encounters. Told through the eyes of his young nephew, “Taichi” sends the reader through a New York besotted by the hippie movement, and provides a small glimpse into the hidden world of yesteryear’s martial arts, practiced only in small enclaves of America’s Chinatowns.

Five Star Review on Amazon By Kathleen Rice
Family. A common thread in this charming story surrounding an adolescent boy and his uncle navigating duty, education, a culture’s oral history, and the ancient art of T’ai Chi in New York’s Chinatown during the 1960s. The story is really the young nephew Paul’s to tell, but it is Tai Chi master Kuo Yun San’s return to the US from China that guides the path ahead for the Chen family.
Martial arts study, first love, family secrets, loyalty, a mentor’s substance abuse, silent benefactors and competition are topics woven through the tale by Tai Chi teacher and jazz pianist Marc Meyer. HIs first novel shows a knack for blending topical issues like immigration, addiction, debt, athletic organization protocols, trust and faith with the beautiful story of one extended family half a century ago.
