With more fiction than science and more humour than was intended enjoy this amusing and whimsical tale about the exploration into dreams. One man, Alex, an ordinary clinical scientist’s assistant embarks on a most unusual journey, one that takes him into a different realm – his subconscious while he sleeps.

Alex puts his name to an experiment dubbed The AL-EX Project (ALternative EXistence) based on an idea that soon becomes an obsession. There are places to explore and answers to be found to age-old questions into dream interpretation.

It is all a great adventure. In his dreams Alex can be a lottery winner, a secret agent, he can talk to animals, and he even thinks at his darkest hour, that he looked into the face of God Himself. Quite literally he is testing the limits of dream control. And along with his mentor, (George, affectionately nicknamed The Scientist) they, with advanced technology, are even able to record Alex’s dreams and play them back, enabling more accurate almost perfect total recall.

But is Alex playing with fire on a mission; on a slippery slope to a huge calamity very possibly putting his life at risk? Will his marriage stand the neglect as he puts his heart and soul into alternative priotities?

Smile at Alex’s antics, and shake your head in despair as he travels further into the unknown, encountering inexplicable situations and beings not of this world. It’s all make-believe however…but it could happen. This lightweight read contains a little bit of fantasy, a little bit of sci-fi, some science thriller with a dash of romance thrown in.

“An Amazing Read!”

Five Star Review on Amazon By TLM

The AL-EX Project (alternative existence) Testing the limits of dream control by C.M. Donaldson captured my interest at the very beginning and held it throughout the entire book.

The main character, Alex, is plagued by nightmares so he and his colleague, the Scientist, search for answers as to why the nightmares occur and for a means to prevent or cure them. Through their research they discovered a way they can monitor, interact and manipulate the dreams.

The characters are well developed and likable. Kayj, Alex’s wife is an amazingly strong female character and I loved her. I laughed and cried with them and at times I wanted to reach into the pages and slap them silly.

The subject of dream control is very intriguing and I imagine something that we all wonder about. Dreams have fascinated us since the beginning of time. Donaldson does an excellent job of mixing both the scientific and humanistic aspects of dreams. We are pulled into the dreams with Alex and it feels as if we are experiencing the dreams with him. The author’s descriptions of the dreams, the emotions produced are spot on.

Donaldson’s writing was a dream. The words flowed with ease and the style was a breath of fresh air.

I was sorry for the book to end (this is my gage on how much I enjoyed a book.) When the author leaves me wanting more, I know it’s a book I’ll remember forever. I will definitely remember the AL-EX Project and will be looking for more books by this author.

About the Author

C.M. Donaldson is a London-based independent author, and an avid reader who loves science fiction, detective stories, murder mysteries and courtroom dramas.

Always having kept diaries over the years, the first work by this author was the real-life humour tale about the dieter’s struggle, as candid as you like, pulling no punches as told from the point of view of a hapless, no-hoper yo-yo dieter, amusing and relateable, under the pseudonym of Pearl Barley. This has now been followed by the sequel (two years in the making) Waist Not; Want Not? as the struggle continues with no end in sight and middle-age has crept up and kicked her firmly in the teeth. It’s all highly amusing observational humour however, and not to be taken too seriously.

Although a humble medical secretary, C.M. Donaldson also had some short stories hidden away as well as some humorous light verse (a la Pam Ayers) that she entered into poetry competitions, and then she got her first inspiration for a quirky sci-fi lite tale, thus creating The AL-EX Project (Alternative Existence) about a clinical researcher who, with his scientist mentor, discovers a way to travel back into his dreams at will through highly unethical experimentation. This came about through having an interest in dreams, dream interpretation and the mysteries surrounding the dream state, and the fact that quite often people feel frustrated that the tail-end of vivid dreams are all that is left on waking, and it was the author’s curiosity and fascination into the dream phenomena that led to the writing of an amusing and imaginative tale of adventure, testing age-old theories, pushing the boundaries with unethical practices and meddling in the unknown heading down a spiral towards an inevitable mishap.

It must be noted that the dreams written in detail in The AL-EX Project novel are dreams the author has actually had, some of which had been written down and saved some years before so it was useful to use material that had a touch of realism to it, albeit of a dreamy nature.
