Modern technology has blurred the definitions surrounding death and dying. It has cast a veil of doubt upon the idea of discussing end of life issues with the young and old, healthy and ill, vibrant office workers and even our most dedicated medical professionals regarding realistic, spiritual, and compassionate choices before or at the end of life. As a result, patients and family members find it increasingly more difficult to make informed decisions at this most difficult time. This is a self-help guide offering you facts based on research, anecdotes, and suggested reading, all intended to help you make the right choices when navigating the stormy seas that we will all face someday. Chapter one of this book is called, So here I Am in a Place I Never Imagined. Don’t find yourself there! Quite often, heart wrenching, end-of-life decisions must be made in a moment’s notice. Are you prepared? Have you discussed your wishes with a trusted loved one? Is your physician on the same page? Are your caregivers on the same page? Are you certain your final wishes will be carried out? This book was written to help you understand many of the issues you may face, and help you unravel their complexity. So, when the time comes, you can think clearly and make informed decisions on behalf of the dying, be it you or a loved one. Learn the difference between Healthcare Advance Directives and Durable Power of Attorney. They vary state by state. Learn what CPR really is and how it is performed. Learn how successful CPR really is, and understand many of the possible complications. Learn the difference between life-support and mechanical ventilation. Learn the reality of the financial impact on dying individuals and their families. Learn how modern technology prolongs the dying process, and how the line is blurred between life and death. Learn and understand the confusing term, “terminal.” Learn about prolonging life vs. quality of life. Learn the consequences of withholding the truth from you regarding your illness or outcome. Learn what it means to hold on or let go. Learn to focus on the positive. It can be done. Most importantly, learn to believe in yourself. Learn to empower yourself with knowledge. Your knowledge will arm you with strength and confidence, when making life-changing decisions.

“You need to read this book!”
Five Star Review on Amazon By Laura Lynn Grimme
This a very well written and timely book. People are living longer butthe quality of life is not always optimal. If you have not discussed your end of life wishes, this book is a good guide. Unlike the movies, you do not have CPR and then go back to your former life. Read. This. Book.
About the Author
So, I asked him, “Why are you finally writing these books?” He said, “It’s time.” From a young age, Enrique began to study religion and spirituality from a cross-cultural perspective, and developed an unquenchable thirst for reading, learning and teaching. After diverse studies in pre-med, he became a Respiratory Therapist in 1973. In the early 1980’s he earned a degree in Anthropology from the University of South Florida, Tampa, including advanced training towards a Master’s degree. During his anthropological training, there were two focal points of attraction that summoned him—religion and medical anthropology and his educational path continued to draw him to the empirical sciences, and social and behavioral studies. In the early 1990’s, after many years working as a clinical Respiratory Therapist, he accepted the position of Director of Respiratory Care and Pulmonary Rehabilitation at the former Transitional Hospital Tampa, Florida. A few years passed and as he continued to excel in his new position, something much more important to him was missing—hands-on patient care and the need to offer them alternative choices. Enrique resigned from directorship to pursue metaphysical studies and alternative healing methods—such as, the effects of sound, Pranic healing, Auric healing, and various other forms of energy and spiritual work. In 1996, he became an Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki Master and Karuna Reiki Master, and began teaching Reiki under the name, The Illuminators in St. Petersburg, Florida. He also offered classes on other alternative healing methods, and practiced spiritual counseling. As his studies continued, he earned certifications in Reflexology and Hypnotherapy. After his near-death experience in 2001, he returned to the healthcare field as a clinical Respiratory Therapist and continues to practice until today—with an entirely different perspective. Since the beginning of his career in 1973, Enrique’s primary area of expertise continues to be taking care of the critically ill, and those who are dying.
