This is one hell of an exciting read! It’s a roller coaster of love and hate, and sex, of being in control and losing control, and sex, and of course fire and ice, and did I mention hot sex?! This is the first of Dorothy F. Shaw’s books that I’ve read, but it won’t be the last.
While Defensive Heart is the second book in The Donnelly series, you do not have to read the first book (Unworthy Heart) to understand. However, after reading Defensive Heart, how could you not want to read the first book?! I highly recommend you go get the first, get the second, and squirm in anticipation of the next book! Just like James, it’s on my “to do” list lol.
Defensive Heart is an intriguing, steamy novel where you’ll both love and hate the main characters. What you see on the outside, isn’t necessarily what’s on the inside. Sonja, a straight-laced successful 41 year old attorney, appears to be confident and in control, yet she has a controlling ex-husband and a rebellious teenage daughter. James (Jimmy) is a pierced, tattooed, decade younger successful artist who knows what he wants when he sees Sonja, knows she is attracted to him, yet baffled by her standoffish nature. How can a successful 41 year old attorney bring home a young pierced tattooed artist? What kind of influence would this have on her already rebellious daughter? What would her controlling ex-husband say? James is the only part of Sonja’s life where she feels as if she has any control, to allow James in a little, but keep him from getting too close.
Ms. Shaw did an amazing job creating the main characters. Sonja-the-attorney and James-the-artist really came to life, characters which I related to because I was the business suit “good girl” dating the younger tattoed, pierced guy. (However, I do have a tat and a wild side lol) But is James what Sonja needs to tear down those walls she’s built up so high? Fire and ice!! This couple takes a walk on the wild side and boy does the wild side appear in this book! Hot, steamy, sensual…this book will leave you panting and craving more…and more…and more…
I give this book 2 thumbs up, 5 stars and a huge grin because this book sparked something in me which I had squashed a long time ago. I was privileged to receive a copy of Defensive HeartMs. Shaw is to erotic novels what Stephen King is to horror!!
PS: If you run in to James, please send him my way…I happen to have a thing for tattoos, piercings and hot sex 😉

Dorothy F. Shaw stumbled into a career in Corporate America and has spent the last 18 years climbing the corporate ladder. A fan of journaling about her troubles, she started an online blog in 2009, and poured her emotions out for all to see.
As luck would have it, the first post came out in the form of a poem. A few authors she’d met online encouraged her to write more, and in the span of 2 years she wrote over 150 poems. The poems led to short stories, which blossomed into novels. Evident from the very beginning was her voice as an author that is real and packed with wit and sarcasm. Her stories will always include complex, broken people trying to figure out how to start and keep a relationship as well as lots of hot, steamy sex. As Dorothy sees it, the journey is the best part.
When she’s not writing, she’s a mother, and a friend to many. She truly lives and loves in technicolor!
