He was once Robin Hood, bold outlaw of Sherwood; now he is Robin of Huntingdon, one of the most powerful earls in England.
Sir Roger of Doncaster, an enemy from Robin’s crusading days, is back in England and determined to take Huntingdon for his own. Caught in a desperate struggle for survival, Robin’s only solace is Will Scathelock, the man he has loved and resisted for years. Surrendering would be easy, but the stakes have never been higher. Roger has the might of King John behind him, and he will not rest until Robin is dead. Win or lose, Robin’s life will never be the same.

This is N.B. Dixon’s third installment of her retelling of the Robin Hood myth. As with the first two, it is well written, fun, and a different spin on the age-old tale of Robin Hood. At this point in the story, Robin is settled but is he really happy? Despite his love for Will, he lives a conventional life. He still is highly involved with his tenants and seeks to protect them at all costs. His relationship with Marion is interesting and far from traditional. The story takes off when Robin’s lands, tenants, and the life he his built is threatened by Roger of Doncaster. Roger believes everything Robin has built is his and he expects to take it. The story is built around both untruths and truths. How does one live with the conventions of their world crashing down on them? Can Robin balance life as an Earl, while still in love with Will?
Dixon does a great job of telling an action-packed story while highlighting multiple taboo relationships. I am not sure people would be as open minded as Dixon portrays, but it is a compelling view of the world. There is a little more saucy action, but not a lot of explicit description. I really have enjoyed this series. I love the Robin Hood story and love that Dixon has taken so much further than the usual versions. She does a masterful job of mixing myth, history, and romance.
