Mary is laying in bed watching dust float in the sunlight streaming through thread-bare curtains. It's a cheap untidy room with some stranger snoring beside her. She is filled with an urge to start a new life for herself so grabs her things and boards a train. Lazarus is lead detective on the case where the murder victims had been tortured slowly over time. The stumps where their fingers and toes should be have been have wounds that healed over different periods of time. As fantastically gruesome as the murders are, it's the characters that make Nuala's writing so addictive. I hope she finishes book two in this series. Absolutely my favorite writer. - amanda
