“Like the proverbial albatross around one’s neck!”
Five Star Review on Amazon By Clark Slomin
Even as an adult (over 50) I’ve enjoyed Carol Roman’s picture book, “Captain No Beard,” so it would come as no surprise that I’d enjoy Roman’s latest, an early reader chapter book; “Oh Susannah: It’s in the Bag.” What was surprising, however, was that I was expecting a light-hearted and breezy tale!
Susannah is not unlike any other grade school student. She has the usual unwritten list of responsibilities at home and classroom, domestic and social obligations, and seemingly trivial tasks. Her mother constantly reminds her of some of these, her teacher – others, and her friend – yet another. However, Susanna somehow allows one small thing on the list to lapse into a problem, and the next thing she knows, EVERYTHING in her life becomes a big problem; all accumulating into the physical and metaphorical small confines of her backpack! She lugs the thing through school and home like the proverbial albatross around one’s neck, ultimately disposing of it under her bed, which subsequently finds its way into a nightmare as she sleeps!
I found myself feeling her stress as I read through the chapters – much of it rushing back from my own experience as a grade-schooler decades ago, but also from my current life of never-ending adult multitasking.
I’m never one to reveal a book’s conclusion in my reviews, but I will say that although this was an enjoyable read, it did end up with some valuable lessons and advice. Carol Roman knows how to combine entertainment with education in nearly everything she writes, without sounding preachy.
Kids will enjoy this book as much as I did, if not more!
