by Novelist Adriana Gavazzoni (Author)

Amidst wartime chaos, 'Sketches of Life' weaves an unforgettable tale of love, survival, and secrets, painting the poignant journey of Lily and Ninon on a canvas spanning continents.

Book Description:

A careless girl. A survivor alone in the world. A world in turmoil.

In the middle of WWII, France surrendered to Germany, and young Lily, half French and half American, has her life turned upside down. A careless girl, full of dreams, Lily must leave France and go to her father’s homeland, taking her mother with her. Lily’s mother becomes completely dependent upon her teenage daughter, and Lily is forced to grow up quickly. Trying her best to support them both, balancing work and dreams of continuing her studies, Lily meets her first love and discovers passion and betrayal on her way.

Ninon is a survivor. Alone in the world, she works as an exotic dancer in a French cabaret called Le Passioné, where she moves her hips to put food on her plate until a new and dangerous opportunity is presented to her. Although Ninon has lost faith in love and God, life will show her surprises can be found around every corner.

France, the United States, Spain, Austria, and Argentina present the backdrops for an epic tale of people trying to adapt to a world in turmoil—one that’s filled with secrets and surprises…

5 Stars - Congratulations on your 5-star review! Reviewed By K.C. Finn for Readers' Favorite Sketches of Life is a work of fiction in the interpersonal drama and historical sub-genres penned by author A. Gavazzoni. Written for mature readers due to the presence of sexual situations, this intricate drama follows the life of Lily, a young woman with mixed heritage between French and American roots. In the middle of the Second World War, Lily must move to her father's American homeland when France surrenders to Germany, taking her poor dependent mother with her. Our second protagonist, Ninon, lives a very different life and seems to have lost all faith until an incredible opportunity is presented to lift her out of her current situation. Exploring themes such as duty, passion and the pursuance of one's dreams, the protagonists of this tale are young women who find themselves in the midst of one of the world's most trying times. As the pressure of war fills everyone with dread, Lily and Ninon emerge as relatable heroines still striving for something bigger for themselves, taking the opportunities to survive that life gives them. Author A. Gavazzoni has crafted an ideal balance between the close narration of the emotive, character-led drama and the wider backdrop of a war-torn world and its many sociocultural struggles. The plot contains plenty of ups and downs, but usually in ways that you would not expect from a WW2 novel, delivering a personalized tale of struggle and triumph amid adverse circumstances. Overall, I would highly recommend Sketches of Life to readers seeking something new and truly unique.
