When MP Caoimhe Black attends a wedding in her native Ayrshire, she runs into Tony Carter. Many years earlier Tony and Caoimhe had a secret affair which resulted in tragedy, they have not seen each other since their relationship ended. Neither have been able to forget the feelings they once shared.
Trapped in loveless difficult marriages Tony and Caoimhe attempt to examine what happened to them and face the ghosts from the past. Twenty years have passed since they were lovers.
Caoimhe has in the intervening years forged a career as a senior labour politician. Regarded as being a strong capable woman, she has risen to the top of her party. A trusted confidant of prime minister Edward Wilson, she is loved within the labour party and by the voting public. Caoimhe is feared by opposition politicians and is a fierce and competitive cabinet minister.
Caoimhe has a trusted circle from whom she has been hiding secrets for most of her adult life. When she and Tony meet again, long unresolved issues come to the fore and their stormy relationship induces a chain of events which threaten to destroy Caoimhe and ultimately bring down the government.
