Book Description:

It’s been six months since thirteen-year-old Alyssa McCarthy left magic behind for good. Or so she thought…
Then the enchanted objects that protected her disappear. Now a skeleton named Errol has cursed her with magical powers that keep getting her in trouble. Suddenly strange things are happening with disastrous effects, and if Alyssa can’t remove the magic, she will lose everything she holds dear.

In order to get rid of her unwanted wizardry, Alyssa will have to boost her bravery and confidence and determine who Errol really is. But every time Alyssa uses an enchantment, Errol is one step closer to getting his flesh back and becoming alive, and he will do anything to achieve his goals…even if it means destroying Alyssa’s happiness.

Originally published in 2016 as “Wizardry Goes Wild” and “The Uncontrollable Curse” in April 2019, “The Unruly Curse” is book two in the exciting and suspenseful paranormal Magical Missions series.

Sunayna Prasad, the 25 year old author of “The Unruly Curse (Alyssa McCarthy’s Magical Missions Book 2), has been writing since she was a child…even took a break in her teens, and now she is back at it with a charming, enchanted novel for young adults. Our heroine, 13 year old Alyssa has struggled to keep magic out of her life. She even went to great lengths to get enchanted protection objects which she keeps in her room so that magic does not find her. The book opens with a burst of purple smoke blows into her bedroom and a piece of paper appears that says, “Welcome Back to Magic”. This is the last thing Alyssa wants in her life. From Book 1, we know she struggled with magic, six months later she has a new guardian and is trying to live the life of a normal teen-ager in a new town. Alyssa knows the protection objects will prevent any harm happening to her…but they are gone! A skeleton, Errol has placed a curse on her as she is the lone person that can help him in his quest to regain flesh on this bones. Alyssa wants nothing to do with this, but what she wants is not the point…and so ensues a wonderful tale of magic, friends, family and having the courage to face what life has thrown at you. This is a wonderful coming of age novel that presents true issues of teens and young adults without giving them a story that is too grown up for them with content that is not appropriate. I predict a long and wonderful career for the author as she has truly found her niche with this genre of book.

“The Unruly Curse (Alyssa McCarthy’s Magical Missions Book 2)” by Sunaya Prasad is a skillful coming of age tale involving a young magic practitioner, Alyssa McCarthy, who must contend with, Errol, a spirit who is using her magic abilities to return to the land of the living. Disrupting her daily life by provoking her to use magic at inopportune times, Errol gains more and more of his corporeal form the more Alyssa uses magic, which, despite her efforts, becomes increasingly difficult to do. Contending with both the vicissitudes of teenage life and the wayward spirit, Alyssa must find the courage and strength to master both, in this well-written and engaging teenage fiction novel. Ms. Prasad renders Alyssa very well. The author’s ability to capture a teenage voice and perspective is one of the book’s highlights. Alyssa is likable and relatable, which makes the book accessible not only to a teenage audience, but also to a broader readership as well. Moreover, the fantasy element is not the sole plot driver: teenage growing pains also define Alyssa’s journey here, which helps ground the heroine with the audience. Well-incorporated expository details help the reader suspend disbelief, making Alyssa’s world and supporting cast believable and appealing. The book is also not overly complicated – in a good way. Unlike many fantasy novels, there is not a convoluted backstory or massive ensemble of characters that you need to know in order to become engaged with the plot. Indeed, even though this is Book 2 in the Magical Missions series, you don’t need to read Book 1 to enjoy this one I’d say, as someone who has not read Book 1, based on the author’s skill here, I’d likely recommend Book 1 as well. The author also foreshadows intriguing elements, such as Alyssa’s mother’s past, that hopefully will be spelled out in future installments. If you’re looking for a compelling, accessible, and enjoyable read, I’d highly recommend “The Unruly Curse” by Sunaya Prasad.
